Going plein-air painting or urban sketching in Denmark - Heres where you can shop artsupplies

Well hello there fellow artists!I don’t see many articles like the one you are about to read.. Well I do, but none I have seen are about Denmark… So I thought, since I live here, I will just write a blog post about it!This post only Includes stores from the three main islands in Denmark. The smaller islands like Bornholm or Ærø, are not covered in this post.

So if you are traveling here for a sketching or painting adventure, here's where you can, shop for supplies you might have forgotten while packing, or if you are just looking for a refill, here's where you can get what you are looking for!

Copenhagen (Inner city of CPH)

Stelling

Stelling is by far my favorite shop to visit when I'm in “Strøget” in inner copenhagen.

Stelling is perfect if you are already in the inner city… Because it's not super far from The CPH central station, Tivoli, and ofcourse all of the awesome shopping opportunities that you have on Strøget.Stelling has 2 stores by the big fountain (Storkespringvandet) which lies in a plaza in the middle of the shopping streetsThe first store is called “City kunstnerartikler" (Which translates to “City art supplies") The store is a stone throw away from the fountain, but the entrance are pretty hidden! It almost looks like you are walking into an apartment, but don't worry cause the store is one floor up, you haven't walked into the wrong place if you see the colorful carpet with “Stelling” written on it! Just go up the spiral stairs and walk in through the door with the glass window in it, et voila, you are there! But do be careful, because the store is quite small, just like in an inner city apartment, so going in there with a giant backpack or a suitcase is NOT a good idea. It takes up space, and may knock stuff down the shelves! Just so you are aware!

They have open hours Monday through Friday at 10AM to 6PM and on Saturday they are open from 10AM to 4PM, Sunday they are closed.

City Kunstner Artiklers address are; Amagertorv 9, 1st floor / 1160 København

The second store are called “Stelling papir & penne” (Which translates to “Stelling, paper and pens”)

It lays in the opposite direction from the fountain than the city art supplies one does, on one of the smaller side streets. This one is a regular looking store, but they don’t only sell art supplies, they also sell very fancy and expensive watches and fountain pens! Sooo I hope that you don’t have a soft spot for those things, or else it could be an expensive experience for you ;)

Papir & Penne have open hours Monday through Thursday at 10AM to 6PM, on Fridays from 10AM to 7PM and on Saturdays from 10AM to 5PM, Sundays are closed.

Papir & pennes address are; Store Kirkestræde 1 / 1072 København

Kreatima

Kreatima are a sister store to the larger and more general hobby store “Panuro”As far as I know, there is only one Kreatima shop in copenhagen…

This is a pretty basic art supply store, but compared to their sister chain Panduro, Kreatima sells higher quality art supplies!Kreatima has open hours Monday through Thursday from 10AM to 6PM, on Fridays from 10AM to 7PM, on Saturdays from 10AM to 5PM and on Sundays from 10AM to 4PM. They do however have closed on Danish holidays, Like Easter Sunday for example, so just be aware!

Kretimas address are; Vestergade 2, 1456 København

Tutein & koch

Tutein & Koch was previously a small basement store near Nørreport station, but have since moved in together with another art supply store, called Viking 1914.This means that Viking 1914 don’t have their own physical store anymore, since Tutein & Koch basically are the branding that this store goes with. Viking 1914, do still have an online shop though! Tutein & Koch have grown from their small basement store to a large store near “Rådhuspladsen” and Tivoli, on a street that basically translates to; Color street, beautiful!

Tutein & Koch has open hours Monday through Friday 9AM to 5PM and on Saturday from 10AM to 3PM, Sundays are closed.Tutein & Koch address are; Farvegade 8 - 1463, København K

Sealand (Sjælland) Outside CPH

Cbart

Cbart lies on a coastline road in Karlslunde, in a white/gray family house. The town is close to “Vestegnen” where I grew up! The shop is easy to miss if you drive, and you can't just make an U-turn on the road, you have to wait for a round about and then drive back if you miss it (Speaking from experience)The shop also doesn't just take any payment cards like most stores, they do take Danish cash though so come prepared! But if you happen to live in Denmark, you can also pay with “Mobilepay”The store is quite small, but that's what makes it cozy, and if you happen to go there in the summer, you can visit the beach just nearby, and maybe afterwards take the bus to Ishøj, and go to “Arken Museum”

Cbart has open hours I believe 3 to 4 days a week from 10AM to 4PM… BUT Currently because of a mixture of shortage of staff and illness they ONLY have open on Thursday from 10AM to 4PM!Cbart address are; Karlslunde Strandvej 59, 2690 Karlslunde

CreateArt

CreateArt; I have never been there personally, but I have looked at their website many times and do believe I've ordered a few things too from them!

I did, however, used to have a boyfriend (Now ex) who had a friend with a girlfriend who used to live in the town where the store is located, so I've been in the area before haha…

CreateArt is located in Slangerup, not far from Frederikssund, which has a train line going into CPH. CreateArt only has open hours from 11AM to 5PM Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, and is closed all the other days.

CreateArt address is; Industrivej 22 F, 3550 Slangerup

Fyn (the middle isle of Denmark)

Binicki Kunstnerartikler

Binicki are located in the City of Odense, and are a little tiny bit hidden from the rest of the shops in the street. You have to go through a gate or a big curve around some other buildings to get into the front from a sort of backside….It's easy to miss, which is sad, because she doesn't only sell art supplies but also applied art like paintings and flowers, small sculptures and so on. The store is very small and a bit dark in the winter, but that's easy to get over once you see her selection of Maimeri gouache paints!

Binicki have open hours Monday through Friday from 12PM to 5PM and on Saturday from 11AM to 1PM, Sundays are closed.

Binickis address is; Nørregade 39, 5000 Odense

Nyborg Paletten

Now, Nyborg Paletten are a bit of a bonus, and personally one I would like to be a gatekeeper of for myself, BUT I also know that the guy owning the store loves customers to have a look around! I don’t know how well his English skills are, but he's a nice older gentleman, who deserves kind customers!Nyborg Paletten is located in a shopping street for pedestrians only, in Nyborg town, (the first sort of city you’d enter if you took the train from CPH or Sjælland.) The shop not only sells art supplies but also applied art like old books and small sculptures, and other fun antiques. The store looks rather big from the outside, but it's a bit crammed on the inside, so don't go in with a huge backpack on. The stuff may look a bit dusty but seriously don't worry cause all the supplies are sealed so they are in perfect condition! Nyborg Paletten have open hours Tuesday through Friday from 11AM to 4PM, and on Saturdays from 11AM to 1PM. Mondays and Sundays are closed.

Nyborg Paletten address is; Nørregade 13, 5800 Nyborg

Tegne og Kontor

Tegne og kontor (which translates to “Draw & Office”) is, from the outside, an unassuming little shop right beside some grocery stores nearby a detached house quarter. The entrance is basically a red door in a blank wall, but when you walk in.. Oooooh man!The guys owning it are very helpful. I don’t know their English speaking skill, but it's most likely going to get by.

On one side of the store, you have office supplies, and on the other half, art supplies! (The art supplies are to the right when you walk in)They have a pretty large selection, and you can buy things in bulk from them, like fineliner pens and large sketching paper…I usually go there for croquis pads and sketching paper, paint brushes and fineliners. They are located not very far (a couple of kilometers) from the mall in Odense, “Rosengaardcentret” where you can go afterwards if it's cold outside and you need to grab a bite to eat.Tegne & Kontor have open hours Monday through Thursday from 8AM to 4PM, and Friday from 8AM to 3PM. Saturday and Sunday are closed.

Tegne & Kontor address is; Ravnholtvænget 4 - 5230 Odense M

Jutland (Jylland, the “Denmark you can see from space”)

Aart De Voss

Art De Voss is located in Aarhus, in Jylland, and the store looks sort of like an old factory building. But don’t be fooled, they are basically the JacksonsArt of Denmark! They have a HUGE selection of everything art related, that your little artist heart desires!

Plus they have just as huge an online shop!

I haven't personally had the honor of setting a foot in there myself YET! BUT the next time I'm going to Aarhus, I will DEFINITELY visit… Aaaaand walk out of there poor…..

Bring your big wallet!Art De Voss has open hours Monday through Friday from 10AM to 5PM,and Saturday from 10AM to 3PM. Sundays are closed.

Art De voss address is; Klosterport 4C st. - 8000 Aarhus C

Malericentralen

Malericentralen is not only an art supply store, but also a gallery. They are located in the town of Herning, in Jylland.

The store is just down the road near a grocery store and a gas station, on the other side of the road, opposite from regular housing quarters. The selection of supplies are just alright, I usually order frames for my canvas paintings from them, as you can get them in the measurements you need, and then shipped directly to you for you to assemble.Malericentralen have open hours, Monday through Friday from 9AM to 5PM, and Saturday from 9AM to 1PM,Sundays are closed.

Malericentralen address is; Snejbjerg Hovedgade 28 - 7400 Herning

Bogø Design

Bogø Design, are mainly a frame and canvas shop, but they also do sell a good selection of art supplies. They are located in Aarhus, and is not very far from a public forest where you can put your plein-air painting skills to use.

The store is quite small, but still worth a visit. Bogø Design has open hours, Monday & Tuesday from 10AM to 4PM,  Wednesdays are closed, Thursday from 10AM to 5PM, Friday from 10AM to 4PM, Saturday from 10AM to 1PM, Sundays are closed.
